Race to the Bottom

The failure of our state to become an initial recipient of the federal funding to reform educational systems in our country is a teachable lesson on a number of levels. It reveals how impotent our congressional clout is and it illuminates how the politics of education will always contaminate the education of our children in our state and our nation.

It is offensive that our federal government would even engaged in a contest to improve the educational foundations of our nation's students. Our future as a nation should not be subject to a national contest. The truth is this backward proposition was never questioned or challenged but actually embraced by our state leaders . This tragic cheerleading was in full bloom when Robert Bobb the designated DPS savior genuflected and remain silent when our nation's educational czar demonize the DPS as the worst in the country.

Our state leaders role in this saga is shameful instead of being motivated to design new long overdue educational reforms in the state our legislators created a series of hollow reforms that were not only impotent but revealed a desperate leadership unable to even understand and confront its own educational shortcomings.

One hopes this set back will slap our state leaders into reality instead of chasing down prizes behind the curtains of the federal contests. Our state legislature needs to create our own transformative reforms here in Michigan. The citizens of Michigan cannot afford to lose this race.

Abolish the Department of Education. Dispel the myth that compulsory education somehow yields a "better" society. Private industry can do it better.

@D20,

Nonsense private industry has no track record other than to hide behind tis corporate curtain and make shallow claims of excellance..

It always amuses me how thse educated in the public sector now seek to demonize it..

Remins me of those idiot seniors who hate Medicare when that is all they have for health insurance

Thrasher: A simple challenge will prove you wrong.

Get DPS's brightest and best, and put them up against the best from Country Day or De LaSalle -- any academic competition you wish: Science Olympiad, Forensic debate, SAT/ACT...

...and you will see the excellence of private industry.

Predictably, you'll try to worm your way out with the unprovable lie of "biased, racist exams." This, of course, reflects the general cowardice of race-baiters: You can't measure up, so break the yardstick.

Prove me wrong.

D20,

When will you ever get pass your shortcomings..Your propose litmus test means what at the end of the day?

Comparing people based upon test scores have given us a state, a nation a culture that measures the wrong metrics..

Waiting for tired souls like you mature and evolve is such a......

Not a litmus test -- An examination, which will determine whether the student has learned the subject matter.

Comparing people based on their test scores is a critical and objective metric that people (like myself) use to identify which among a field of candidates is most suitable to perform a specific job. To be sure, it is not the only metric used. There are other, more subjective, characteristics to be considered.

However, at the end of the day, I'll take a competent engineer over a sociable engineer. You, Thrasher, argue that subjective metrics should be given priority over competence. Thus, time after time, my company will produce the better mouse trap, while yours will be left to, somehow, uphold "diversity" as its crowning achievement.

As usual, your lofty, ambiguous drivel of "maturity" and "evolution" signal concession of the argument.

D20,

You Doth protest to much....Your long winded excuse just reveals and confirms how my objective retort to your alleged engineered opinions is superior..

I find it amusing how folks like you who claim competence cannot handle the logic of basic common sense..

Clearly your claim to having superior skills, talents, is over rated and a reflection of your imagination..

You are no match for a person of my talent and skill set..

Too much for you, perhaps...

I understand that it's hard for a grad-school dropout to process everything on the first read-through.

Your resignation is hereby accepted.

D20,

SO in other words you cannot measure up to my comments in here..I guess that so called engineer mind of yours cannot handle my logic..lol,lol,lol

I bet you are having quite a headache now....

wow, this is nice guys but most schools public or private are non-profits and, in general, given the same funding and children from the same class outcomes tend to be similar. You get a few outliers but this doesn't much change.
Most schools are built around the liberal arts education model, which is an extension of upper class english education. The further in class you are from this model, the less well your outcomes.
